The project intends to strengthen the actions of the PSFE in favour of sustainable production forest management, of the processing chain of custody and of the implementation of a REDD+ strategy in order to ensure a sustainable increase of the sector’s contribution to economic development and the fight against poverty.
Four specific objectives are targeted : i) Strengthening the capabilities of the forestry administration, and in particular of the directorate of forest inventory and management (SDIAF) in terms of monitoring, evaluation and supervision of forest management concessions ; ii) Promoting the emergence of national capabilities in monitoring of forest ecosystem dynamics for a revision of the national standards in forest production management iii) Facilitating the development of an economic forest observatory possessing an economic and financial analysis capability of the sector in order to orient and support policy decisions related to the sector’s competitiveness and transformation iv) Contribute to the monitoring of the forest evolution in the framework of the REDD+ strategy through the strengthening of capabilities in remote sensing and satellite imagery processing and interpretation, the set-up of a system of monitoring, reporting and verification (MRV) and the development of pilot projects allowing the testing of methodologies in different local contexts.
The project concerns primarily the Ministries of Forestry and Wildlife and of Economy and Planning (MINFOF et MINEP), the universities involved in forestry, the private sector (logging companies and consulting firms) and civil society (elected politicians and local communities of the forest regions).
